Packing Tips

Planning Your Move

Two Months Before Your Move...

  • Call Easygoing Movers and schedule your move: Decide if you want to pack yourself or have our professional packers do it for you.
  • Start to clean things you won't bring: Take a look at what you own and decide what doesn't need to move with you. Don't waste time packing what you don't need. It's not free to ship, so if you don't Need it, get rid of it!
  • What if I have too much stuff?
You may be able to avoid some of these headaches by holding a yard sale several weeks before your move. Collect all of the pants, sweaters, jackets, etc. that you know you never wear and donate them to a local shelter or charity--a good deed that will make your move a little less cluttered. But if you're still stuck with too much stuff, you can always rent a storage unit.

One Month Before Your Move...

  • Start Packing: As early as one month before, you can buy packing supplies, (boxes, tape, markers, etc.). Don't be afraid to start early, if you're moving in the summer, there's no reason that you can't pack your rarely used china or off-season clothes (if they still fit!) one month before your moving date.
  • Don't pack it if don't need it!: The cheapest way to pack and ship something is to NOT do it. We see lots of people pack and ship items that they later realize they don't need--what a waste!.
  • Never pack: combustibles, explosives, aerosols, corrosives, ammunition, paints, and food of any kind, liquids or pets. These could cause damage and will void your insurance. It's best to use them up or give them away before move.
  • Label the contents of all boxes and pack carefully (check our packing tips). Find one room or location in the house to store packed boxes prior to moving day. If you decide to store packed boxes in your garage, make sure the items are safe from the elements, possible flooding, and curious pets.
  • Save all your bills: Remember to save your last bills--they have crucial information like account numbers and customer service telephone numbers that will help you change you utilities.
  • Create a floor plan of your new home: And think about where you'll want to place furniture, art work, appliances, etc. Make sure you consider furniture dimensions as well as the location of electrical sockets and phone jacks.

Two Weeks Before Your Move...

  • Contact your current utilities: electricity, telephone, gas, internet connection, cable TV, etc. to schedule disconnection of services on the day following your move.
  • Keep some cleaning materials and supplies: For your new home and current residence. Ask the current residents of your new home to contact you if they vacate the house prior to the moving date. Then you can get some of the cleaning done before the house is filled with boxes and furniture.
  • If you have young children: Arrange for baby-sitter to watch them on moving day. Since you'll have your hands full, the extra attention from a sitter will distract from the hectic nature of a move, and will make it a pleasant and fun experience for your child.

One Week Before Your Move...

  • Contact your home's new occupants: Leave your forwarding address and phone number so they can contact you with questions or if you leave anything behind.
  • Drain water from all garden hoses, and drain gasoline from lawn mower.

Three Days Before Your Move...

  • Finish packing!: Anything easygoing movers is packing should be left in place. It's easier and safer to pack glassware right from the cabinet. Start packing suitcases
  • Valuables: There are a small number of things that you'll probably want to carry with you or in a personal suitcase. Passport, jewelry, cash, weapons, house deeds and other important documents should be set aside and stored in a safe place.
  • First night: For each member of your household, you'll want to pack a few nights' worth of clothes, bedding, toiletries, etc. and dishware for meals. Remember that it will take you some time to UNPACK on the other end!

Moving Day (Loading Time)...

  • Find a safe out-of-the-way place for pets, so they aren't in the way of the movers or in a position to get hurt. You might want to consider asking a friend or relatives to take them overnight until you're settled.
  • Since you've prepared so well, just relax while the movers load your household goods onto the truck
  • Be on hand all day to answer questions, accompany movers during inventory and confirm your new address and delivery date.
  • Make final check of every room and storage area.

  Moving Day (Off-Loading Truck)...

  • As you're moving in, one person should be keeping an eye on what items are unloaded, while a second person directs the movers on where everything goes.
  • Keep your floor plan on hand as a reference, for both you and the movers.
  • Once everything is unloaded, allow about two to three weeks to unpack and organize your household.

ENJOY YOUR NEW HOME -- CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DID IT!
